BODY LANGUAGE 1It is well known that many diseases are caused by the sub conscious mind creating physical symptoms even though no disease exists. It does this to attract attention to a situation of unhappiness, insecurity or disharmony in its life. It is called body language.Everyone communicates with their body as easily as they use speech. Eye, hand and body movements are well known as a form of communication. What is less well understood is that the mind will also try to communicate a need, using physical symptoms of ill health that can kill or maim the body if the message is left unread. The mind will do whatever it has to do to draw attention to an emotional or spiritual need that has gone unnoticed. Let me begin with some basic body language which is the speech of the subconscious part of our awareness. Animals have a complex range of body movements which, if you understand them will be as instructive as if they had spoken to you. In my farming days I noticed that when cows became lame on the back left leg they were telling me they needed to move to another area. Cattle are nomadic beasts and have a need to roam. When restricted in one place for too long they begin to show signs of lameness in the back left leg which would quickly disappear when they were moved to fresh grazing. I sometimes have patients with pain in one or the other leg, usually in some weak part of the leg. There is no obvious reason for the pain and a medical examination will show nothing that can be treated. The reason is usually a need to move away from a situation which is always the left leg, or if the problem is insecurity, it will be the right leg with the problem. A few questions asking if the patient had a need to move away from a situation would often pinpoint the cause and the pains disappear. If a patient has problems in the right leg and there is no obvious reason the cause is often insecurity. I recently saw a man suffering acute pain in his right leg. It started just after his wife was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Shortly after that their dog needed surgery for a right hip displacement. In both cases the cause was obvious, insecurity. The dog would have recovered without any surgery once his owner returned home. To prove the point, I talked about how well his wife had recovered and the distressing hip pain disappeared in minutes and was able to walk around the room without pain or discomfort. I then asked him to tell me how he had felt while his wife had been so ill. Almost immediately his pain returned. Another patient came to see me with severe sciatica pain in his left leg. I asked if there was a situation that he wanted to get away from. He eventually told me that he wanted to leave his wife but couldn’t bring himself to tell her. While he was describing his domestic situation a solution came to him and his sciatic pain went away within minutes. Of course this does not mean that all leg pain is caused by emotion or that all emotion concerning insecurity or a need to move on will result in leg pains. But it is well worth considering the possibility if you are having these sort of problems and there is no obvious reason. Kidney diseases are sometimes a result of feeling trapped. House cats which are kept inside and not allowed to roam often suffer from kidney dysfunction. I also know of farmers who have developed kidney problems after selling their farms and retire. They then feel trapped in the restricted space of the house. I have no evidence for this except observation but I am quite sure that men have a need to feel free to travel more than women and when restricted kidney function can be impaired. Often all it takes is a discussion and a change of thinking and the patient will improve. There are of course other reasons for kidney failure but before medication or invasive treatment the possibility of an emotional cause should be considered. Malcolm S.
